Jewelry Photos- Fun with FALL Props

by Genea C-K

Hello friends!

Yeah, it's late. It's a Sunday night, strange time to post a blog except I just had a TON of fun with this new program Pic Monkey. It's fall, my FAVORITE time of year! Yesterday I got to enjoy creating inside while a thunderstorm rumbled on through out the day. It was WONDERFUL!
Here is the view from my studio window. When I lampwork this is what I get to enjoy seeing :D
Here is the view out of my other window that was taken today when it was sunny. The weather was a windy 68 and sunny. Perfect for taking some photos.

Here is one of the photos that really made me swoon.
These earrings are by Pink Poppy Studio. Aren't they absolutely GORGEOUS? The beads are so beautiful, but you add a gorgeous fall colored leaf and the piece just comes ALIVE!

So I went out in the sun today to photograph some beads and jewelry for my shop updates this week. It was  very windy and leaves were blowing all over. As I snapped a few pics I reached over and picked up a beautifully colored red leaf.
WOW! You see how this is working? You take  some gorgeous jewelry, add a nice prop and VOILA! You have just created an environment for your piece! I must say I was a little unsure about starting to use some props. I had had a mentor help me with my Etsy shop and she just stressed having plain photos of JUST your work. I knew how much I loved seeing these type of photos and decided to jump in! Clay dings and spacers by Karen Totten. Enameled hoops and lampwork beads by me.

Mmmm gorgeous, huh?! Clay by Marsha Neal Studio, patinated hoops by Karen Totten, weeny dings by me,  Rubber o's by My ELEMENTS,.
Isn't this amazing?! Clay beads by Marsha Neal Studio, Rubber o's by My ELEMENTS, Weeny dings and enameled hoops by me.
All beads by me.

Isn't this photo so beautiful with this red leaf?! I love it! Heart by Staci, clasp, connector and rings by Karen Totten, recycled glass spiral bead and wing dings by me.

Want to know how to really make your photos look pretty?
Hop on over to Pic Monkey(it's free!) upload your photos and create one of these collages!  Hooray for jewelry and fall!

Enjoy!

Inspiration into design- The "Sea Horse" hearts.

blog by Genea C-K

Hello friends!

I am SOOOO excited about my new series of beads inspired by the lovely and talented, Marianne Kasparian of MAKU Stuido, and our very own, Staci Smith of S L Artisan Accents.

From left to right: MAKU heart, Staci's Heart, my heart. The thing about being inspired is to take an idea and make it your own in your medium. It was a total feat in glass to pull of this similar style with my spin. My hands were sweaty and my heart raced! The birth of the "Sea Horse" heart was born!

Here is a photo showing the sizes of some of the hearts. I tried them in a few different sizes, but really loved making them BIG. These are some of my LARGEST beads to date. When you get to making beads this large they get heavy and it's lots of glass to keep warm as you design.

Here is a close-up of one of my favorites. I just LOVE the stripey rainbow snake cane and the gorgeous twisted spiral sparkling pool :D

Love the back side too( he he). The whole " I hate to see you go, but I love to watch you leave." So many wonderful design elements to look at!

But... success usually comes with failure. When making these HUGE hearts I focused most of my heating efforts on the fin and the little antenae while flashing the rest of the bead to keep it warm. The thing I failed to do was keep the bottom part of the cone warm. OOPS! Duh, right?! This is the thinnest area of glass besides the fin. I was literally "heart broken" about this particular heart.

This one too :( Oh sad. The good thing about failure is that is presents us with an opportunity for a new success. So how does that work? Well upon sharing my sadness with Staci she had some ideas to repair the heart and enhance the design. Her idea is add some precious metal clay to the hearts and "restore" them! I am SOOOO excited to see what she comes up with!

I hope this will inspire you do push the limits of your medium and to take all of your failures and turn them into a new success.

Have a wonderful day!

Inspiration, Unexpected Collaboration! Eleanore Thomas of Spin Culture

blog by Genea C-K

Are you ever inspired? Are you ever inspired by someone elses work? Does that inspiration turn into an unexpected collaboration?! Well that is what happened with Eleanore(Nellie) and us! You might have been introduced to Nellie through her mom's(Karen Totten) post on AJE called Fiber Wire and a Fiber Wire Studio Tour. Nellie is the owner of Spin Culture. She creates hand dyed fibers with which she creates bats to be spun into incredible yarn!

I have had the extreme pleasure of getting to know Nellie pretty well from our late night chats on facebook :) During some of our chats and through the release of our limited edition collaboration , Nellie was very inspired by our color palettes! She jumped right in and created these wonderful bats from which fiber wire would be created!
Here is the set that Nellie used for her color inspiration.

Here is an image of the fibers she chose to match on the drum carder.

Here is the finished bat.
and HERE is the INCREDIBLE "Autumn Harvest" fiber wire!

Here are some of the limited edition collaboration sets that are still AVAILABLE!

Remember, once these sets are gone, they are GONE, so hop on over and grab one before you miss out! ;)

Here are some beautiful designs other artists have been creating with their fiber wire to give you some inspiration!

Special Collaboration Packaging- The Icing on the Cake!

 Blog by Genea CK

If something is incredibly amazing it should also have equally amazing packaging, right?! Well I thought so, so I did some behind the scenes work for Staci and me. Can you believe I had to keep this a secret from her?! It's a good thing I had a few close artsy friends I could spill the beans to that would keep my secret safe! You know who you are *wink, wink, nude, nudge, know what I mean, know what I mean*

So first I thought we needed a special kind of thing with both of our logos and "collaborate" on it. Staci didn't have an official high res logo. I stole an image from her copper metal brooch .
I took the heart image and put it through a few filters in photo shop.
I made this, but I really wanted her original hand drawn winged heart image.
Here is what she sent me. I again put it into Photoshop and made it a high resolution image. Keep in mind I am NO graphic tech person at all! I was actually going to get the help of Miss Totten since she is an artsy guru, but she ended up getting that terrible Bead Fest Flu!

So I took out just the heart as it wouldn't work in the designs for the packaging, cards and tags I had been planning to create. I put the heart through a few filters to darken up the black lines and just saved the image file as large as I was able with the original photo I had.

So now that the logo was made it opened the door to the other special creations I wanted to make.

I needed to create our  logs with "collaborate" image.

SWEET! Just how I imagined!!

Now off to make some super SWEET business cards on Moo!

I knew I wanted this image on the cards, but was ecstatic when I found out that you could have a small image on the front with text and a full size image on the back! SUH-WHEET! Hooray for more pictures!

I inserted the collab image to the front of the cards and added the text.
OMG perfect!!

Now to start loading photos I took of all of the sets I had on my end(Staci has half of the collab sets so some even *I* have not seen!) and add them to the backs.

So awesome!! :D

Now for the packaging! In my mind I imagined our collab image stuck to the tops of the boxes. I created this image in Microsoft Publisher thinking I could get it to round the edges for me and I could just cut them out with scissors. Those rounded stickers can be hard to line up perfectly, so why not take out some error? ;)

Ah there we go! A nice thick border to show me where to cut.

Now to stick the stickers to the box tops! AWESOME!!

Now for some special collab beads tags to tie up the beads!

Aren't these just AMAZING?! Who doesn't love cute little detailed perfect touches?

Our packaging is complete!

Now off to package up the sets! :D

A Little More about Inspiration and Collaboration

by Staci Louise Smith

I am sure Genea and I aren't the first ones to ever inspired each other.  For me, inspiration coming from other artists started very young.  I was inspired by music I heard, paintings, the natural world around me, culture, and then............................................ art beads.

When art beads came into play for me, it was the first time I got to have a tangible relationship with the art that inspired me.  Another bonus (thanks to the world wide web) was that I could get to know the artist better through etsy or facebook or blogs.  So inspiration, was inevitably to become collaboration at some point.

Art beads by Lisa Peters Art- one of my first loves in art beads- millions of inspirations came from her beads

For me, the collaboration part really started with Genea.  She is the creative mind that is bursting with ideas (and energy)!  Really, the collab sets we made were her brain child, since she is the one who ran with matching the colors of my beads.

It was her idea to make limted edition sets to offer in 5 color schemes and I jumped at the idea.  It was more of an undertaking then I think we imagined, but I really can't begin to explain how fun it has been to work with Genea and get to know her better through this collaboration.

On Monday we will be doing a giveaway for ONE of the collaborate sets.  This will be available before they are offered anywhere else.  We are also setting up a flickr group for anyone who purchases (or wins) a set, so you can show off your designs you have made with the sets.

I leave you with this thought.....................................

Inspiration comes to us and involves only our own imagination.

Collaboration is intentional and reciprocal.

This blog is about both, and how one can lead to the other, and us saying....DO IT.  Make your inspiration into collaboration!  It is challenging and rewarding.

I hope to have many features on  both of these topics here on the blog for you, and to find others who have collaborated to create works of art together.

Welcome to Inspiration & Collaboration; The Social Artist! The Inner Workings of Collaborations and Limited Edition GIVEAWAY announcement!

Hello friends!

I can't even explain just how incredibly excited I am to be writing our FIRST blog here on Inspiration & Collaboration; The Social Artist! Staci is the mastermind behind this special blog, but together we have had the pleasure of putting our creative minds together for a collaboration!

So what is a collaboration? A collaboration is the coming together of artists to creatively invent a work of art  using each of  their adept skills. When I met Staci through the Bead Soup Blog Party, I had no idea that our friendship and love of beads would lead us here. How exciting huh?! I can't tell you how many times I have been inspired by Staci's work and where we have "volleyed" ideas back and forth to each other.

Here is just one of the many examples. From left to right: my "Vortex Flower", Staci's "Swirl Flower", and my "Vortex Anemone Flower".

You know every good bead needs to be created into an equally beautiful piece of jewelry, right?!
Here is a GORGEOUS bracelet Staci created using her lichen bead, hoop and spiral "s" clasp along with my recycled bottle glass beads.
I just LOVE this one she created with her bronze donut and my "Ancient Pebble" focal.
Sometimes when you design things just JUMP together! Check out this incredible design with art beads by: Staci, Karen and me.

.... and THEN you can make a design just DRIPPING with art beads!

Creativity has no limits!  So jump into your bead box and start designing something fabulous!
